Questions and answers (FAQ) on LASIK

When I am a good candidate for LASIK?

  • If you are older than 21
  • If you find wearing glasses or contact lenses disturbing when working, playing sport or in your personal life
  • If your pupils are too large or your cornea too thin for standard treatment
  • If you need vision correction and your eyesight is in the dioptre range up to -12 spherical and -7 cylindrica
  • If your eyes are healthy, your general state of health is good and you are not taking any medicines that might affect the healing process
  • If you suffer from aberrations

What is the timeline of a LASIK operation?

The treatment itself takes just a few minutes. However, the necessary examinations and follow-ups that have to be performed over a period of three months require time and your active participation. It is possible that follow-up examinations may be necessary again after six and twelve months.

Is a LASIK treatment painful?

The operation is practically painless. During the operation you will probably have blurred vision and you will feel a slight movement on your eye as well as a feeling of pressure. After the treatment, your eyes may feel as if they have dust in them for a few hours. The eyes may water, but no strong pain should occur.

How will I feel directly after the treatment?

A few after-effects of the operation may occur after treatment. These symptoms may include dry eyes and a feeling of roughness. You will be given drops to counteract these symptoms. In addition, vision may be slightly cloudy and there may be sensitivity to glare (mainly at night). This is due to the general sensitivity of the cornea.

How quickly will my eyes recover after treatment?

Do I obtain permanent results with LASIK?

The LASIK operation produces a permanent result. A single operation is sufficient for most people. However, five to ten percent of patients require additional fine adjustment (follow-up treatment) in order to obtain the desired correction of their vision.

What can directly affect LASIK treatment?

  • Your general state of health
The surgeon will check whether you are suffering from any illnesses that would exclude you from laser treatment. He can also consult your GP for this purpose. Pregnant or breast-feeding women must postpone treatment.

  • Taking medicines
Certain medicines may interfere with the eye drops that you are given. These include migraine relief medicines (triptans), hormone treatments (HRT) and anti-histamines. You surgeon will inform you whether the medicines you are taking have an effect on laser treatment. For this reason, it is essential that you inform your surgeon about existing or past health problems and any medicines you are taking.

  • The health of your eyes
The surgeon will examine your eyes for severe dryness, infections, allergies, corneal anomalies or eye diseases (either existing diseases or cases that have occurred in your family) that may affect the subsequent healing process.
