Diagnosis
Retinal detachment usually is diagnosed through indirect ophthalmoscopy. For an optimal insight into the eye the pupil is first widened (dilated) with eye drops. In some cases the physician will also place a so-called contact glass over the superficially anesthetised eye.
If the insight is impeded either through a cataractous lens or due to a hemorrhagic vitreous body or a corneal disease, an ultrasound imaging of the eye can determine if the retina is in place or detached.
