Hyperopia

Long-sighted people see distant objects in sharp focus while close objects are blurred. In the case of hyperopia, the eyeball is usually too short. Here, the lens focuses the light rays to a focal point only behind the retina. The lens is able to correct itself for a long time. Thanks to this natural correction, long-sighted people often have good distance vision up to the age of 40. Younger people have to wear glasses only in cases of very strong hyperopia.

The hyperopic eye is optically corrected by increasing the refractive power. With glasses and contact lenses, this is achieved by means of a convex lens. The correction value of this lens is specified in positive dioptres. A “vision passport” would then have an entry such as +4.5 dpt.

In the case of an operation, the overall refractive power of the eye is changed in order to achieve an optimum state. In contrast to myopia, hyperopia can be corrected by the natural eye lens up to a certain age. The eye lens can deform and adapt itself. This is known as natural accommodation. The refractive power of the lens is increased as a result. This can compensate for the insufficient refractive power of the hyperopic eye when looking into the distance. Consequently, long-sighted people usually have good distance vision up to the age of 40. Glasses already have to be worn in younger years only in cases of very strong hyperopia. On the other hand, reading ability deteriorates earlier in long-sighted people, i.e. presbyopia becomes noticeable earlier on.
