Presbyopia

Presbyopia is caused by the natural aging process of the lens. As people grow older, the elasticity of the lens decreases and it therefore loses its ability to adapt to different distances. This is known as the ability of accommodation.

The accommodation ability decreases gradually with age. This “accommodation loss”, which is normally noticed between the ages of 40 and 50, is a normal process and affects everyone without exception. This means that different glasses strengths are needed for distance and near vision as from a certain age. If a person previously had normal sight for distance vision, i.e. did not need glasses, then only reading glasses are needed. Short-sighted people can simply remove their distance glasses in this situation to see clearly in the near range. In contrast, long-sighted people normally need both distance and reading glasses. Since small sight defects become evident in almost everyone as from the age of 45, many people then wear varifocal glasses.
